Ratchet Cable Cutters

Ratchet cable cutters are handy tools for any electrician. Unlike fencing pliers or side cutting pliers, ratchet cable cutters holds on tightly to the cable and allows the user to make continuous, straight cuts. It also has higher cutting capability than pliers, although not as much as pneumatic cable cutters and hydraulic cable cutters. These ratchet cable cutters are the very definition of specialized hand tools. They typically serve just one purpose but do it in a very quick and efficient manner. Due to this specialized nature these are often set aside in favor of multi-purpose tools. However, having the right tool at the right time can make the electrician’s job easier, often with a much better end result.

Many hand tool manufacturing companies produce ratchet cable cutters. One of the more well-known and trusted ratchet cable cutters are from Klein Tools. Their Klein 63060 Ratcheting Cable Cutter feature hardened steel cutting blades for a clean and easy cut. These can easily cut through copper up to 400 MCM and aluminum and multi-conductor cable of up to 600 MCM. It also features a quick release lock for easy storage in the tool set and a hold-open spring for quick subsequent cutting action. It also offers plastic covered handles for a comfortable, non-slip grip. Along with its ratcheting action that holds on to the cable being cut, it allows a smooth, burr-free cut in multiple successions. Available in 9 inch and 10 inch lengths (this model has a ratchet cable cutter capable of cutting through 750 MCM), these cable cutters are priced at $225 and $324 respectively.

Another set highly praised ratchet cable cutters are the Greenlee 452071 Ratchet Cutters and the 733 High Performance Ratchet Cutters. The 452071 model is designed for single handed use. It has a 2 speed cutting mechanism that adjusts for light or heavy cable cutting. These blades have a maximum cutting capacity of 750 MCM for copper and 1000 MCM for aluminum. It is also fitted with cushioned handles that enhance comfort and grip. These handles are insulated for up to 1000 volts of electricity for the electrician’s safety. The 733 model features a different looking open ratchet system that helps the tools last longer. It still features the 2 speed cutting adjustment but it automatically shifts to normal speed when performing the cut in order to make a clean and even cut, no matter what the size of the cable. It also features fiberglass handles for lighter weight and more insulation from electricity. These ratchet cable cutters from Greenlee offer the features of a great hand tool, with their easy to use designs and safety precautions. The 733 model measures 15 ½ inches in length and is priced at $355, while the 452071 model measures 11 inches in length and is priced at $300.
